Thriving Snake Plants Splits

In October of last year, I discovered that my flea market snake plant had sprouted some splits.

Two of the splits seemed slightly larger than the third and well suited for two new red pots that I had just acquired, so I prepped them some new plastic sleeves with soil and set them down in their new homes on the kitchen sink window sill, which faces west and gets plenty of direct sunlight in the evening.

The other one, I crammed into a tiny pot and placed amongst the masses in the cluster arrangement I have by the window in the dining room where it gets filtered eastern light and occasionally some evening sunlight from the windows on the other side of the living room.

It would appear that the snake plant grows best with direct sunlight, as the two sitting on the kitchen window sill in direct sunlight have grown tremendously in the past 10 months.

Additionally, the other snake plant I acquired back in September 2014 is finally spreading out!  Of course, initially I had it crammed quite tightly into a narrow vase where it barely had room for soil, much less root growth or propagation.  I later repotted it into a large pot with other succulents in an experiment.  I was dissatisfied with the experiment so I split it up and set the snake plant on its own once again.  In its own private environment, it spawned a new spike almost immediately.

Splitting Up

With the start of Halloween season, I had to relocate some of my babes because of the decorations that obstructed their sunlight.  In doing so, I noticed my larger snake plant had quite a few pups started.  I decided to take the opportunity to split them off and pot them in their own individual containers.

I took the opportunity to throw some fresh soil in the original snake plant's mix.  I used a cactus/succulent mix, which has some sand and a little perlite.  I used some of the old soil in the pups' containers.  I read somewhere that all fresh soil can shock new plants, so I gave them a good mix of old and new.

Flea Market Babes

At the Dublin Flea Market today, I stopped by the plant lady's stand to scope out her latest clippings.  I snatched up two varieties of snake plants (much more substantial than the one I got in April!) and a spider plant (finally!).

From the minimal research I have done, I believe the spider plant can thrive in one of my indirect or bright light locations (a few feet away from and east or west window).  I'm going to just water it a small amount every few days, like I do with most of my other plants.

This snake plant did not have much of a root system when I pulled it out of the styrofoam cup.  I wonder if she just broke it off of its prior stem a few days or weeks before bringing it to the flea market?  If so, that could explain why it took the other one so long to start showing signs of growth (it was spending all of its energy re-growing lost roots!).

Bought this little baby for 25 cents at the flea market today. I have been looking for them around at the local nursery but somehow was unable to find one. I'm excited about taking a wee one like this and growing it into something substantial.

Here is my purchase right when it got home.

Here it is after I potted it in a more permanent container and set it on it's new home on a northern wall next to an eastern window.

I've yet to do any research about this one regarding care and maintenance.

Here are some tips I just gathered regarding this plant.

1.) Propagate: divide during repotting, new shoots emerge as spikes and can be taken and potted separately.

2.) Water: once a week, reduced to once every two weeks during winter

3.) Light: can thrive in low light conditions, but grows well in bright natural light.

4.) Fertilize: 10-10-10, or mild cactus fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter.

5.) Soil: all-purpose succulent potting medium, or something low in peat.
